Hello and thank you for visiting my webpage. I am honored to be the assistant principal, at what I consider an elite small school district in Cass County, Cassopolis Public Schools, perticularly Sam Adams Elementary School. I am looking forward to this new and exciting school year. We have much to accomplish this year with our dedicated staff as we make our way this year.
Our behavior team is diligently working to provide positive behavior supports for all students and staff at Sam Adams Elementary. Monthly Ranger PRIDE behavior assemblies have been added to showcase and support the positive choices students are making everyday at school. Our Ranger PRIDE (P-Positive, R-Respectful, I-Inclusive, D-Dependable, E-Enthusiastic) shows everyday and in every way.
For the previous two years, our staff at Sam Adams Elementary participated in professional development in the area of Mathematics with Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA). Our initial student assessment data has shown K-6 student improvement in our math curriculum.
Sam Adams adopted the workshop framework in reading and writing in 2009. Lucy Calkins the founding director of Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, is the original architect of the workshop model. The Common Core State Standards have increased the rigor expected of students in reading and writing and the workshop model addresses the issue of differentiated instruction, students receiving instruction at their individual learning level. Each reading and writing period begins with a 15-20 minute whole group mini-lesson focusing on a reading or writing strategy. Then students have an independent work period where they are independently engaging the strategy just taught in the mini-lesson. As students are working independently their teacher is holding one-on-one conferences and small group instruction at the individual student's instructional level. We have seen growth in our student achievement through the use of this instructional model.
Students will also have yet more new technology to use within their classrooms. Chromebooks have been introduced into classrooms for student use as well. We are continually assessing the needs of our students and finding ways to meet these needs through the best instructional practices and through the use of cutting edge technology. I look forward to working with you and your child again this year.
Please take a moment and view the video, "This is Cassopolis". You will see the dedication and commitment our students and staff have for our great district! Go Rangers!
